Mobile Testing Challenges – Jailbreaking & Rooting

On July 22, 2010 – The U.S. Copyright Office, a division of the Library of Congress, authorized several new exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), one of which allowed mobile phone users to “jailbreak” their devices to use apps not authorized by the phone’s manufacturer. This enabled end users to add applications and gain access to the operating system of the mobile device. For Android devices the term is called “rooting”. This capability to access the operating system at an administrative level has been leveraged by many mobile testing companies to create automated testing solutions for these mobile devices.
